From Kingsley Amplification:

The Hatchet is a valve (12ax7 in this case) phase splitter in a pedal. A phase splitter is an integral part of the power amplifier in a push-pull valve (tube) amp. Pretty much all guitar tube amps that have more than one power tube are push-pull designs. If a tube amp has only one power tube then it is not a push-pull power amp and is what is called a "single-ended" design (for example a Fender Champ). There are also a very small number of tube amps that have two or more power tubes, that use something called a parallel single ended circuit. In any case, it is only the push-pull amps that use (or need) a phase splitter circuit. Some examples of push-pull amps include the Fender Princeton, Deluxe, Super and Twin reverb (basically all Fender amps that do not have a single output tube), the Vox AC10, 15 and 30, the Marshall JTM45 and Super Lead, the Mesa Boogie Mark series amps, Dual Rectifier.....and on and on and on. The vast majority of amps that are over 5W are push-pull amps.

Hatchet Feature set:

Volume - this is a dual pot that controls the output level of both halves, or phases, of the output signal.

Tone - a simple 1st order low pass filter that rolls off high end as the control is turned down. It is basically the same as a "Cut" control found on the Vox AC30, only wired in reverse (so it get's brighter as it it turned up, whereas a Cut control get darker as it is turned up).

Phase - this switch allows you to listen to either one of the two out of phase signals. One of them will therefore be in phase with the incoming preamp signal, while the other will be out of phase. You can use which ever side sounds best to you. There will be some tonal and slight gain differences from tube to tube as the two gain stages of a 12ax7 are not typically very closely matched. You can also use this switch to flip the phase of your signal, should that be of use in your rig.

Bright - a 3-way bright switch that works on both sides of the dual volume pot at the same time. Sometimes when running into a power amp the resultant tone is not particularly bright, so it's nice to be able to add some top end as needed.

Output - this 3-way switch gives you full output (very hot) and two attenuated levels, which also roll-off some high end, making them sound much better for "front of amp" use.

B+ - this is a voltage control and changes the voltage the tube runs at from around 70VDC to around 315VDC. Lower voltages compress and clip more quickly and sound more "sizzly", while higher voltages have higher headroom, output and dynamic range.
